In Summer 2023, Destiny Arts Center created a safe space for a new group of young people in Carter Gilmore Park in East Oakland. Neighborhood kids dropped their bikes to watch martial arts demonstrations. They practiced hip-hop moves to participate in weekly dance battles, and created their own raps and ballads. Giving youth a space to move, process their emotions, and feel connected is essential to community healing and is grounded in the violence prevention roots upon which Destiny was founded over thirty years ago. Whether in a park, a school, an after-school program, or at our North Oakland Center, Destiny Arts creates spaces for children to reach their highest potential.

ON THE PULSE OF LIFE, a short experimental documentary, documents the birth justice moment in Alameda County, California, and celebrates new motherhood for Black women. It is in the first few breaths of life that can make our futures equitable — when will we choose to make this a reality?

This film was made in collaboration with BElovedBIRTH Black Centering and is a part of the Futures exhibition at the Smithsonian Arts and Industry Museum, and was executive produced by The Alliance for Media Arts + Culture.

Post-Production Producer: Jay Gash

This short film documents Black women leaders, specifically those who are mothers and/or who have lost their children to violence, of CHANNEL BLACK, the 2018 cohort of The Black Mama’s Storytelling Fellowship. Channel Black democratizes the process by which we make meaning of the world we live in—we change the story and the storyteller. The iterative training program positions Black mothers to shift public narratives by giving them the tools to identify, craft, and share their stories, perspectives, and analysis in their communities, as well as in the media.

This project emerged out of a collaboration between Mia Birdsong and Shanelle Matthews, activists with expertise in communications who work to build empathy for, and power in, Black communities in order to decrease the external and internal discrimination Black people experience.

SWIPE (short film) Ryan is searching the internet for that perfect match but has no luck. Maybe the answer lies closer to home. This sweet film promotes self-care and spending time with yourself while negotiating the superficial world of internet dating.
